Wondering how much CBD oil you should take?

As the wellness benefits of CBD (Cannabidiol) and the cannabis plant become better known and more people are open to the idea of trying it, they can quickly become overwhelmed with the different strengths and types of products CBD oil is available in. You can now find a wide range of products on the market, from pure CBD oils to vape e-liquid for vaping devices, CBD topicals and CBD edibles.

One of the main questions the Blessed CBD team receives from both inexperienced and seasoned CBD users is: how much CBD should I take?

Knowing the dosage of CBD isn’t an exact science, but we’ll attempt to break down the important factors that go into figuring out the best dosage when taking CBD oil.

Why aren’t CBD oil dosages standardized?

The short answer is the MHRA and FDA (Food and Drug Administration), at the writing of this article, hasn’t recommended a daily amount for the consumption of CBD, meaning that CBD doesn’t have an official serving size.

Adding to the confusion is the fact that most CBD companies reference “a dropper full” as the recommended serving size. The droppers on most bottles are unmarked and don’t fill to the top, which confuses customers further.

How can you know what half a dropper is? Should you fill the dropper entirely?

While a dropper full can certainly be a dosage, it’s important to understand there is no correct way to know if that dosage is right for you without taking into account:

  • Bodyweight
  • Body chemistry
  • Potency of the CBD product
  • External lifestyle factors

Considering the factors above and the fact that the human body’s endocannabinoid system (which is what interacts with CBD) changes over time, you can quickly see that the correct dosage of CBD for you will shift over the course of your life.

Basically, it takes some trial and error on your part to find the perfect CBD dosage for your needs. You may need to experiment with different methods and dosages (low/high doses) before you experience the optimal effects of CBD.

Calculating your CBD dose

Now that we know there’s not really a universally accepted serving size of CBD, how do you choose the CBD dosage that’s right for you?

These 3 steps will help you figure it out.

Step 1: Use your body weight to estimate your dosage

Similar to most substances that affect the body, someone with less body mass requires less CBD to feel the same effects as someone with more body mass.

Here’s a good guideline to keep in the memory bank:

(the above dosage calculator numbers are approximations and highly subjective due to the nature of CBD consumption – always consult with your doctor for medical advice and to check for drug interactions, as there may be side effects)

Step 2: Start with lower doses and increase dosage slowly

There’s a reason some people swear by one brand and another has no success with it – we are all made differently and our bodies have had their own unique experiences and history with substances, vitamin supplements, and medications.

In other words, our body chemistry affects how we will react to CBD. This is why you shouldn’t listen to your friend that gets results taking the smallest amount, or the one whose body can handle a large dose of CBD. What works for your friend may not work for you, and vice versa.

This is why it’s important to determine your CBD oil starting dosage based on weight. Then you need to gauge your body’s reaction to the minimal amount of CBD it was given before increasing it.

After you are comfortable with the minimal dose, gradually increase the amount of CBD while monitoring your body’s reactions closely. Being able to feel your body plays an important role in finding your perfect dosage.

Step 3: Talk to your doctor or healthcare professional

If ever you feel completely out of sorts about the amount of CBD to take, always consult your physician – they are there to help you. This is even more important if you have any existing medical conditions you are concerned about.

Just because your doctor may not have the most experience when it comes to CBD doesn’t mean they can’t help. They have more information than anyone on your body’s possible reactions and side effects of CBD and can provide you with a more accurate dosage of how much you need daily for your unique situation.

Accurately measuring CBD dosages

The most popular and best way to consume oil is using a CBD tincture. Unfortunately, these are the trickier types of CBD products to accurately measure. While knowing your ideal dosage is critical, being unable to accurately measure it makes that information quite useless.

Understanding the dosage you need is one part, but how do you make sure you measure it properly?

Many people love tinctures because they are one of the easiest and most effective ways to consume CBD. After filling the dropper with your dosage, you hold the oil under your tongue anywhere between 60 and 90 seconds before swallowing.

As both our full-spectrum and broad-spectrum CBD oils are very potent (high concentration of CBD), when we refer to a “drop”, we literally mean a droplet of the oil. This is not to be confused with a “full dropper”. To improve the bioavailability, place the drops under your tongue (sublingual), hold for 60-90 seconds and then swallow.

Knowing the right milligrams of CBD to take only requires a little bit of simple math.

  • Our 500mg strength gives you 2 mg of CBD per droplet
  • Our 1000mg strength gives you 4 mg of CBD per droplet
  • Our 1800mg strength gives you 6 mg of CBD per droplet

For example, if you’re using our 500mg CBD oil tincture for a daily dose of 22.5mg, you’ll take just over 11 drops (22.5 / 2). You can space out those 11 drops throughout the day (4 drops in the morning, 4 drops in the afternoon and 3 at night).

If you’re using our 1000mg CBD oil tincture for a daily dosage of 18mg, you’ll take just over 4 drops (18 / 4).

The thing to remember is to start at the minimal amount based on your weight and symptom severity and then increase to a higher dose gradually to get the desired effects your body needs. Sometimes all it takes is a low dose, especially if it’s your first time using CBD hemp oil products.

If you’re finding the natural taste of our full spectrum CBD oil quite “earthy” (this is the good stuff, we promise), we suggest taking your dosage both in the morning and night before you brush your teeth. The toothpaste will help in masking any aftertaste.

Or if you’re looking for different forms of CBD, you can try our high-quality broad spectrum CBD oils (with zero THC and additional terpenes), tasty CBD gummies, CBD capsules or lotions.

Final thoughts on accurate CBD dosing

It’s understandable why many people want exact dosage recommendations when it comes to the use of CBD. While the Blessed CBD team hopes this guide truly helps you (and gives you peace of mind), remember that your measurements don’t have to be super exact. The effects of cannabidiol will always vary from person to person, so please be patient with the process.

If you’re looking for a CBD oil product that is full spectrum (by utilising the whole hemp plant) and comes with an array of cannabinoids, we invite you to give Blessed CBD a try.
